How others perceive my brand

In the last two months I’ve done some personal branding work with Reach Communications Consulting.  Part of my work with them included a tool (360 Personal Brand Assessment) which gathered input on how others perceive my brand.  I submitted a list of 35 people who know me pretty well.  Reach surveyed them directly so that their responses were completely anonymous.  20 people responded with great feedback which has been really helpful.

Here are the brand personas that their feedback identified as most closely matching their experience of knowing me.  Below the ranking are the descriptions provided by Reach for each persona.

Rank           Brand Persona  (Number of Combined Responses)

1                   Visionary     (13)

2                   Expert     (11)

3                   Judge     (10)

4                   Connector     (9)

5                   Creator     (9)

6                   Truth-teller     (9)

7                   Entrepreneur     (7)

8                   Calmer     (6)

9                   Wonderer     (5)

10                Achiever, Confidence Emitter, Rock and Self Starter (all with 4 responses)

More feedback on my brand – comments

In addition to the quantitative feedback provided by the 360 Reach Personal Brand Assessment tool provision was made for anonymous comments.  Here is a sampling:

His warm open style draws people to him and builds trust easily.

Every time I talked with him he was encouraging and I felt more energized coming out of his office.

Rick has unique skills in that he understands the details but can also assemble the details into a world-class solution.

Great leadership skills, outstanding motivator, passionate, caring and outstanding coach.

Rick is very good at building consensus across diverse, sometimes conflicting groups.

He always inspired me to do my best and achieve what I can.

Rick is tremendously supportive.  He does not micro manage his people.

Strengths Finder 2.0

A very useful self assessment tool I completed in the last two months is Strengths Finder 2.0.  It is the second generation tool which Gallup describes as ” rooted in more than 40 years of research”.

Use of the tool requires the purchase of the book which provides you with an access code which you use to complete an on-line assessment.  The process was easy and the output was quite thought provoking and valuable to me.  Like many others I’ve found it easy to focus on my weaknesses.  The authors of Strengths Finder argue that its a far better investment to develop your strengths than to fix your weaknesses.

Here are the top 5 themes from my assessment with the short description provided by Gallup.

Ideation: People who are especially talented in the Ideation theme are fascinated by ideas. They are able to find connections between seemingly disparate phenomena.

Strategic: People who are especially talented in the Strategic theme create alternative ways to proceed.  Face with any given scenario, they can quickly spot relevant patterns and issues.

Futuristic: People who are especially talented in the Futuristic theme are inspired by the future and what could be.  They inspire others with their visions of the future.

Achiever: People who are especially talented in the Achiever theme have a great deal of stamina and work hard.  They take great satisfaction from being busy and productive.

Relator: People who are especially talented in the Relator theme enjoy close relationships with others.  They find deep satisfaction in working hard with friends to achieve a goal.
